About HeadForCode and myself
I’m Nick Lewis, an independent web developer and technology consultant based in Reading. I’ve worked in the software industry for 30 years, and through HeadForCode I help clubs, charities and small businesses with their websites and technology, in plain English and at a sensible price.
I’ve spent 30 years building for the web, nearly 20 of them running my own freelance business and working directly with the people who needed things built.
During Covid I closed that business and went back to being an employee. Five years later, like a lot of people in tech, I was made redundant. Rather than look for another full-time job, I finally did something with an idea I’d been sitting on for years, along with the domain I’d registered for it: HeadForCode.
Today I’m a one-person business. I work mostly in TypeScript, with Vue and Nuxt, and host on Netlify. Being small means you deal with me directly, from the first conversation to the site going live and beyond.
How I work
- Free of jargon
- No jargon. I explain what I’m doing and why, so you can make good decisions about your own technology.
- Cost effective
- I suggest the simplest thing that does the job. Often an existing site needs some work, not a rebuild.
- AI tools
- I use AI tools to work faster, but I review every line of code that it produces and still write most of it myself.
- Straightforward quotes
- You get a fixed quote before any work starts, or my day rate of £500 for open-ended work.
Outside work
What I enjoy when I’m not building websites, and how some of it finds its way into my work.
Music and live coding
I enjoy making music with code, using live-coding tools such as TidalCycles and Strudel.
Community projects
I’ve built websites for community groups, including a Scout group, an arts festival, a big band jazz club and a village hall.
Kayaking and outdoor activities
I enjoy spending time outdoors, especially kayaking and other water-based activities.
